The South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association is a chapter of the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation. We offer the ThinkFirst injury prevention program at no charge for students in elementary through high school. The 45-minute presentations provide education on the brain and spinal cord, explain how they are impacted by injury, and address how students can be more safety-conscious in their everyday lives. Each presentation includes a volunteer with a brain or spinal cord injury who shares how a disability has impacted his or her life.

Each year in the United States, an estimated 17,000 people sustain a spinal cord injury and 1.7 million sustain a brain injury. The most frequent causes of these injuries are motor vehicle crashes, violence, falls, sports, and recreation. The good news is that most injuries are preventable. The ThinkFirst program is aimed at helping young people reduce their risk for injury.
