Quality of Life and Sexuality Among Individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries

Purpose of the Study and Participant Inclusion Criteria: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sexuality and quality of life amongst individuals with spinal cord injury. This study will seek to determine whether there is a correlation between self-esteem and quality of life as well as between sexual depression and quality of life. Participants must be 18 years old or older, with a spinal cord injury, and have had a history of sexual engagement.

Description of the Study: This study will include online surveys from at least eighty participants through professional and social networks. Inclusion criteria for our participants include: eighteen years of age or older, have a SCI, and have a history of sexual engagement prior to injury.

Risks or Discomforts: Because of the personal nature of the questions, you may indirectly reflect on unpleasant memories. If you begin to feel uncomfortable, you may discontinue participation at any time, either temporarily or permanently, and it will not affect your relationship with the researcher or the university.

Benefits of the Study: This study will bring awareness to how sexuality affects well being for individuals with spinal cord injury. This will open a channel of communication on a topic that might otherwise be difficult to talk about. Participants also gain better insight on their own sexuality by filling out the online survey.

Confidentiality: Responses to surveys cannot be traced back to the participant. Surveys will not ask for personally identifiable information. In addition, responses will be summarized amongst other participants which will further protect your anonymity.

Incentives to Participate: There are no incentives or compensation for participating in this study.

Voluntary Nature of Participation: Participation in this study is voluntary. Your choice of whether or not to participate will not influence your future relations with California State University, Dominguez Hills. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent and to stop your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled.
