This survey will help scientists better understand the experience of being an informal caregiver. Informal caregivers are family members or friends who provide unpaid care and play an important role supporting the lives of those experiencing illness. Informal caregivers may help with eating, dressing and bathing, provide emotional support, keep financial accounts, and may also help with home medical treatments, arrange and attend patient appointments, and coordinate patient care among multiple providers.
Caring for a friend or loved one who lives with chronic illness can be stressful. Many caregivers spend more than 11 hours a day providing care, and may need to reduce or discontinue their employment and other activities as a result. As the family member of friend’s health declines, need for the caregiver can increase and caregiver quality of life can decrease. The impact of caregiving on the caregiver can threaten the wellbeing of both the caregiver and the patient.
As a growing number of scientists study the work and stress of caregiving, it is important to have a tool that will accurately assess the work of caregiving. This survey was created to better measure the experience and life changing impact of caregiving.
