As a teenager, Yanisse Scott survived a carjacking in her native Puerto Rico in which she was shot twice. One of the bullets severed her spinal cord and left her a T6/7 paraplegic. Three years later she moved to the United States on her own. After eventually settling in Columbia, she found the Midlands Breeze meetings and began attending.
In 2010, Yanisse obtained her master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. She became SCSCIA board chair in 2015 and currently works part-time for Palmetto Richland Hospital with Project READY. This program provides information and interactive opportunities for adolescents and young adults to help them prevent spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
Yanisse is passionate about living her life to the fullest and helping others achieve their highest level of independence. In addition to traveling and spending time with family and friends, she describes herself as an adventure junkie. Her pursuits have included zip lining, sky diving, snorkeling, white water rafting, horseback riding, and jet skiing.
